How often should you wash your dog?

Depending on the condition, your dog may be better off without a bath or may need more regular baths. In general, a healthy dog with a short, smooth coat and no skin problems does not need to be bathed frequently. In truth, unless your dog has an underlying skin condition, he doesn't really need a bathroom unless it's smelly or especially dirty. Frequent baths don't have to be full, but wrinkled dogs like bulldogs usually can't heal skin folds and need help to prevent fungal infections. (3) (6) (0) (8)

Bathing your dog too often can deprive them of the natural oils they need for a healthy coat and skin, according to Readers Digest. Washing your dog too often (weekly or even bi-weekly) can strip the skin of sebum, damage hair follicles, increase the risk of bacterial or fungal infections, and compromise natural insulation. The American Kennel Club also recommends bathing the poodle breed at least once every four to six weeks, with regular brushing between baths to maintain the coat. According to Dr. Cathy Billmeyer, medium- and long-haired dogs should be bathed frequently, usually every four to six weeks, while short-haired dogs can be bathed every one to three months. Such dogs, including Vizhlas and Wirehaired Dachshunds, are bathed about every three months. (7) (6) (5) (1)

Dogs with curly coats, such as Portuguese Poodles and Water Dogs, should be bathed once a month or every three weeks. Hairless breeds such as the Chinese Crested Dog, which lack the skin protection provided by the coat, should be bathed weekly. Oily-skinned dogs, such as Cocker Spaniels and Basset Hounds, benefit from a weekly or bi-weekly bath. If you use cold water and watch the amount of shampoo you use, you can bathe an itchy dog once or twice a week. (1) (6) (8)
